A long history in Goole
Our roots in Goole go back a long way. James Broomer founded Taylor Broomer & Co in Goole in the mid-1950s, with offices in Howden and Crowle, and the Howden practice can be traced back to the late 18th century. In 2004 Taylor Broomer & Co joined with Symes Bains of Scunthorpe to become Symes Bains Broomer.
In November 2020 we took on the private client department of Heptonstalls in Goole, bringing experienced wills and probate lawyers and support staff into the firm and significantly increasing our agricultural and commercial work in the Goole area. Today our Goole wills and probate team works from the Port Office on East Parade.
Wills for Goole families
A will lets you decide who inherits, who deals with your estate and who would look after young children. Without one, the intestacy rules decide, and an unmarried partner or stepchildren can be left with nothing. We prepare single and mirror wills, and wills with trusts where you want to protect a beneficiary, a second family or a home.
We send you a draft, talk it through, and make sure it is signed and witnessed correctly. Reviewing it every three to five years, or after a marriage, separation, birth or a change in the farm or business, keeps it up to date. Read more about will writing.
Farms, land and family businesses
Much of the land around Goole and Howden is farmed, and many of our Goole clients have farms or family businesses. Passing on a farm or a family business needs more care than an ordinary estate: who will run it, how other children are treated fairly, how land held in partnership or by a company passes, and how inheritance tax reliefs for agricultural and business property apply. Those reliefs are complex and the rules have changed in recent years, so it is worth reviewing an older will and succession plan with us. We work alongside your accountant where that helps.
Lasting powers of attorney and deputyship
A lasting power of attorney lets people you trust deal with your money and property, or your health and welfare, if you lose the ability to decide for yourself. It has to be made while you still have capacity and registered with the Office of the Public Guardian before it can be used.
Where someone has already lost capacity without an LPA in place, a family member or professional may need to apply to the Court of Protection to be appointed as their deputy. Our Wills, Probate and Deputyship team handles these applications and supports deputies afterwards. Read more about powers of attorney.
Probate and estates
When someone dies, we can either obtain the grant of probate for the executors, or deal with the whole estate: valuing assets, completing the inheritance tax forms, collecting in and selling assets, paying debts, preparing estate accounts and making the final distribution. Where a house or land needs to be sold or transferred, our own conveyancing team in Goole can handle it. If there is a dispute about a will or an estate, read about will disputes.
